This is a world where the moon is a massive eye that opens once a month. Where the moon looks unleashes chaos that defies reality, causing changes that last even after the eye closes, these are called Moon Gazes.
At a young age, Yamada suffered through a deeply traumatic Moon Gaze. He gained power, but lost everything. He spent decades living a life of solitude, keeping people at a distance.
Until a second Moon Gaze impacted his city. Attempting to escape, he met Emi, a young girl. When she asked for help, what was he going to do, say no? After rescuing her, he joined up with combatants from the Defence Force sent to help the city.
He's now their newest member, after learning he can make a difference.

- š Haunted
Yamada's childhood trauma encouraged him to keep people at a distance, avoiding making personal connections. He learned to keep things shallow, keeping people from knowing him or worrying about him.
He has developed a tendency to put up a smiling, confident facade, flippantly brushing off any problem. He doesn't actively push people away, but simply tries to give the impression he has everything covered or is too cocky to be bothered with. His humour can be biting, but itās rarely mean-spirited; instead, itās a shield against the world.
He's very quick-witted, in words and action, and usually follows his instincts, especially in tough times. This often has Yamada act in what he calls 'calculated recklessness', pulling off wild tricks. He's especially good at being purposefully annoying and getting under people's skin. This does mean he sometimes gets in over his head, but he finds he performs best under pressure.
Despite his haunted past, Yamada is naturally kind. He has an inherent empathy for others, especially those who are suffering or marginalized. The problem is that he knows this and has spent much of his life trying to avoid others' sufferingāhe's still getting used to chasing trouble.
He doesn't like being praised for who he is as a person (doing cool stuff and getting praise is fine), and it's one of the few ways to get him flustered.
While he works hard to be chill, Yamada has some seriously pent-up anger, and when he gets mad, he gets mad. Then spectacularly getting even. These days, it's generally released on behalf of others, since he doesn't value enough about himself to get that bothered by anything that targets him.
As a result of Yamada's transformation into a Moonlit, he has a minor compulsion to modify and shuffle things. This manifests most often as wordplay from rearranging words on impulse. If he doesn't change something more substantial regularly, like his job, schedule or so on, it negatively impacts his mood and he starts reflexively changing more until he feels fulfilled.
Appearance
Yamada is fairly tall and well-built, with an athletic physique. He does tend to look rough, with stubble, dark messy hair, and dark rings under his eyes. He has striking green eyes that are normally twinkling away. Since he can look like anything, he inherently forgets to put stock in his appearance, hence the messy look. He dresses for comfort too, tracksuits usually.
This default form is actually a shapeshifted look itself, and he isn't completely sure if he has such a thing as a true form anymore, or if he's just pieced a look together when changing back and forth over the years.
His default form has a husky voice, usually in an understated but jovial tone. Think Kenjiro Tsuda, especially as Joker of Fire Force.
PB is from 'The NPCs in This Village Sim Game Must Be Real!' His default face with stubble, face without and body.
Abilities
Yamada was altered by the reality-bending events of a Moon Gaze. He gained the power of transmogrification, able to transform himself in countless ways. It's not simple shapeshifting, because he alters the qualities of his body. For example, if he becomes ice, he is cold. If he becomes lava, he is hot. If he becomes an owl, he can see in the dark. Naturally, the inverse is true, e.g. if ice he can melt. His powers interact with other people's abilities on this principle- powers that only work on organic things won't work on him when he's stone, but a geokinetic could control him.
He usually throws in some creative flair to his shapes, and when trying to be underestimated or confusing, they can be a little goofy. For example, if he needs to deflect a large projectile, he might turn into an oversized baseball player.
Turning into energy forms is harder for him, because they're less stable. It's also a new ability, so his skill level is lower. He can only keep it up for a few seconds. So he usually takes animal, vegetable or mineral forms. He can do complex machines as easily as animals.
There are limits to his transmogrificationāhe cannot directly imitate other powers. He has to take a form that can achieve what he needs. For example, if he wants to blow something away, he has to turn into a whirlwind or grow a fan; he can't turn into someone with aerokinesis. He can create non-integrated parts, but if they are not in contact with him for 5 seconds, they fade to nothingness, so doing things like turning his hand into a gun will chip away at him as each bullet disintegrates. But he can generate a sword or something as long as it stays in his hand. He can imbue more energy into separated pieces to make them last longer, but has no idea he can do that.
Maintaining a form he has already taken does not use up energy, but the act of morphing does. Morphing away injuries drains him faster, and unless he takes the time to repair damage, it is carried over from one shape to another. Anything which denatures him counts as an injury, so turning into sand and extreme heat fusing him to glass harms him.
He doesn't gain any knowledge when taking formsāfor example, if he turns into a karate master, he can't use karate. He's just shaped like a karate master. On the flip side, his body always moves precisely as he wants it to because he has control over it in ways other humans do not. Yamada can filter his thoughts through a generated brain to simulate instincts.
He's highly susceptible to the placebo/nocebo effect, because his body follows his mind. This makes his biggest challenges match up against fellow tricksters.
When it comes to combat, he tends to over-rely on being able to take a form that counters an opponent and can be described as moderately skilled in rough, brawl-based martial arts. His moves are a bit sharper due to his body control, but he doesn't have the background knowledge to make full use of it. He's good at playing the trickster and pulling mind games.
He can change his voice, and cheats when he sings.
Some example forms he uses regularly are:
- A giant red ape that can breathe fire is a versatile combat form. He uses it to gauge opponents before taking a more specialized form to counter them.
- Chameleon-like creature for stealth.
- Steel humanoid when he needs to be a juggernaut.
- A big blob of goo when he needs to be defensive.
- A rocket-man for rapid flight when stealth isn't an issue.
- An x-ray, to zip through walls.
- In his youth his favoured fighting form was a bipedal manticore with black vulture wings and a scorpion tail. He still reflexively takes this form when he gets serious in battle.
Miscellaneous skills include being a good (but not great) driver from many delivery jobs and an excellent cook.
Notes
Most people only have one name in his world. Having more than one is reserved for nobility. Those with one name, when necessary, give their name as 'Name, of Place' and narrow it down as needed. Yamada never does this, despite Yamada being an incredibly common name, as the destruction of his home city has rendered him the only Yamada of Yūhikaigan. In universe, this gives a vague sense of a fake name. (When AU'd into settings where two names are the norm, his name is Taro Yamada, which is basically like having the name John Smith or John Doe, and thus sounds equally fake).
He's very fond of his name, viewing it as the only thing his parents gave him he has left, and when he names attacks and forms, it's often a pun on his name (e.g. Yamathunder for a lightning attack, Yamagma for a lava form, Gorillda for a gorilla form etc.)
Yamada's view on his own gender is vague because he hasn't really thought about it. He goes by he/him largely for convenience. He places no real value on gender, and would describe himself as gender fluid and pansexual if he put any thought into it. Which he doesn't.
